Overview
BOB System fits shelving, drawers and storage into service vans for plumbers, electricians and other trades. We built the configurator everyone uses to design and quote those interiors, plus the admin platform and reseller portal behind it.
The challenge
Every quote went through a slow, unstable system. Staff and resellers had learned to start over when it crashed.
What we built
A configurator with synced 2D and 3D views, an admin platform, and a reseller portal, on the same database BOB has run for fifteen years.
How it's used today
Everyone who quotes a van uses it: in-house staff, resellers, and end customers. BOB shows it at trade fairs and trains its resellers on it.
It starts with one question: which van do you have? The model sets the cargo area's real dimensions and which bases fit it. Then you pick the left side, the right, or both, and fill them with shelves and drawers. It all runs in the browser, so nobody installs anything.
The 2D plan and the 3D view show the same interior, side by side on a larger screen. Change one and the other follows, so you can think in floor plans or walk around the van, whichever suits the question. Products snap into place on the bases, and the rules for what fits where speak up while you design, not after the order reaches BOB.
When the interior is done, it becomes a quote as a PDF: a page for each side of the van, with a picture straight from the 3D model and the parts that sit there. The configurator speaks eight languages, from Swedish and Norwegian to German and Dutch.
Behind it, the admin platform replaced both the old reseller system and BOB's in-house order system, so catalogue, orders and resellers live in one place. It reads and writes the same MariaDB database BOB has run on for fifteen years, and every product, order and customer record is reused as it is. New tables grow alongside the old ones and take over as the data is cleaned up, with no cutover date.
Quoting is probably only slightly faster. The real change is how it feels. You used to wait for the screen to unfreeze. Now you design fluidly in 3D, with the business rules keeping the result on track. BOB has shown it at trade fairs and trained its resellers on it, and the resellers say they enjoy working with it more.
How we built it
Seven decisions that make the configurator easy to work in, and that let fifteen years of data come along.
Synced 2D and 3D
Both views are editable and always in sync, side by side on larger screens. The design happens right in the 3D view, on the van you have.
Snapped, not freehand
Products click onto the bases on the left and right sides, so shelves and drawers land where they belong.
Business rules in the tool
What fits where is built into the configurator and applies while you design, so designing freely and quoting correctly are the same activity.
One system for everyone
In-house staff, resellers and end customers work in the same configurator, in eight languages, and the admin platform replaced the two order systems that came before it.
No big bang
The 15-year-old MariaDB stayed where it was. The new SvelteKit and .NET platform reads and writes it directly, and new tables take over gradually as the data is cleaned up.
Art direction
The 3D models and the rest of the visual 3D work were made with guidance from SQRE Media (opens in a new tab), a big part of why the configurator looks the way it does.
Rolled out through the resellers
BOB showed it at trade fairs and in training sessions, so the people who sell the interiors learned the tool first-hand.
